The Good News of Messiah: Fourth Edition

The Good News of Messiah is one of the small number of translations that consistently correct the increasing mistranslation of the πιστος, πιστις, πιστευω word group (mistranslated: believing, faith, believe). The corrections are “faithful,” “faithfulness,” and “hold faithful” or “confirm faithfulness” (to) Messiah, i.e. pledge faithfulness to him in the verb form. The mainstream versions are driven by a theology of mental assent to doctrinal creed. That is why they translate πιστευω as “to believe,” reducing faithfulness to Messiah to mere mental assent. But in the original languages, salvation was never a matter of assent to a creed. It was, rather, a full commitment to faithfully follow the Almighty Son, the man from Nazareth. The GNM also translates the traditional “Son of God,” as “Almighty Son,” preventing a misunderstanding of the text.

Another word group corrected is the δικαιοω verb word group. The tendency of mainstream versions is to give a narrow sense of this word (declare in the right, acquit). The term is restored to a broader based sense current in the first century, “to administer justice,” (to) someone. This puts a new light on the atonement, explaining that in Messiah, the Almighty was administering a favourable justice to us in the death of Messiah.
